Fielding Competencies
1. Competency: Diversity
Explanation: Understanding of alternative points of view, diverse worldviews and/or epistemologies
2. Competency: Critical Thinking
Explanation: Critical analysis and synthesis of theory, research, or both.
3. Competency: Scholarly Writing
Explanation: Appropriate writing, including development of a coherent, focused theme or argument, and overall effective communication
Explanation: Understanding of alternative points of view, diverse worldviews and/or epistemologies
- Needs improvement: Focuses solely on the culturally dominant points of view and does not articulate alternative perspectives.
- Competent: References a range of alternative perspectives along with dominant perspectives and provides sound scholarly-practice reasons for choosing the perspective or perspectives of focus.
- Strong: Outlines the key alternative perspectives available in the scholar-practitioner community and provides comparisons and contrasts among them. The work offers a substantial integration of dominant and alternative perspectives, a new theory that overcomes the shortcomings of existing approaches, or both.
2. Competency: Critical Thinking
Explanation: Critical analysis and synthesis of theory, research, or both.
- Needs improvement: Shows limited knowledge and perfunctory understanding of theory related to the area under study. Does not critically assess the relevant research and expresses little understanding of its relationship to theory and practice; presents a superficial or incorrect interpretation of theory and research, little awareness of the ethical issues, or both.
- Competent: The work demonstrates basic knowledge and understanding of theory in relation to the area under study. Contains correct explanations, use of key concepts, assumptions, debates and ways of knowing that inform the design and analysis of the relevant research. Shows clear connections between theory, research and practice and sensitivity to ethical issues.
- Strong: The work contains a clear understanding and critical analysis of theory and research with no errors and shows insight into its relationship to practice; it offers explanations of key concepts, assumptions, debates and ways of knowing that inform the design, and analysis of research. It shows a thorough understanding of the ethical issues and their implications.
3. Competency: Scholarly Writing
Explanation: Appropriate writing, including development of a coherent, focused theme or argument, and overall effective communication
- Needs improvement: The topic may be clear, but work lacks substantiated argumentation and its overall organization is weak. Sections are not logically ordered and transition between the sections, paragraphs, or both, are abrupt or awkward. There is little sense of beginnings or endings and there are numerous digressions or elaborations that confuse the reader.
- Competent: The topic is clear and the work is generally well organized despite the fact that some sections need greater focus or occasional digressions distract the reader. The overall theme or argument is clear and adequately substantiated. Transitions may be somewhat weak or missing, but beginnings and endings are clear.
- Strong: There is a coherent flow among a number of complex ideas. Difficult topics are discussed in an understandable manner and the general argument or theme is clear, focused, and very well substantiated. The work anticipates the reader's questions. Transitions are clear and smooth, with no digressions. The writing style is consistent and engaging. Varied and vivid details are used to support the main ideas. Points are often extensively elaborated.
Media Psychology Program Competencies
1. Competency: Narrative expression and analysis
Explanation: Demonstrates an understanding of commonly used narrative structures, particularly as they relate to media-based storytelling, and employs various methods of narrative analysis, particularly as they relate to media-based storytelling and narrative.
2. Competency: Understanding, designing and conducting research
Definition: Implementing effective research based on a clear, measurable research question and effective research design, and producing clear and compelling research documentation and reports about research processes and outcomes that observe APA guidelines.
3. Competency: Ethics
Explanation: Applying ethics to research and professional practice, and observing IRB guidelines and submission requirements.
4. Competency: Leadership
Explanation: Demonstrating leadership through the development and communication of original research and innovative perspectives in the field of media psychology, as well as through social advocacy and activities in the area of social justice.
5. Effective Communication and Scholarly Discourse other than through Scholarly Writing
Explanation: Conveying information through dialogue, virtual media, arts-based projects, social media, professional communities, etc., that is readily understood by multiple audiences.
Explanation: Demonstrates an understanding of commonly used narrative structures, particularly as they relate to media-based storytelling, and employs various methods of narrative analysis, particularly as they relate to media-based storytelling and narrative.
- Needs improvement- Demonstrates a developing understanding of the narrative basis of some kinds of media-based expression, as well as how to analyze the efficacy and impacts of those media-based narrative expressions. In addition, can employ some kinds of media in the development of original narrative.
- Competent- Designs and conducts analysis of various types of media-based narrative, as well as designs and implements media-based strategies based on narrative theory.
- Strong- Demonstrates exceptional skills in independently designing and conducting narrative analysis research, as well as in developing narrative media-based expression based on narrative theory.
2. Competency: Understanding, designing and conducting research
Definition: Implementing effective research based on a clear, measurable research question and effective research design, and producing clear and compelling research documentation and reports about research processes and outcomes that observe APA guidelines.
- Needs improvement- Demonstrates some steps in the design and conducting of an epistemologically sound research study using one or more methodologies, and appropriate quantitative and/or qualitative analytic procedures to develop findings or theory. Provides limited evidence of communicating, and using research outcomes and skills in the capacity of a leader to academic, professional, and lay audiences in an understandable and persuasive manner. Has an unclear understanding of developing a measureable research question to serve as the foundation of a research project, and of the role and application of APA guidelines in documenting research.
- Competent- Designs and conducts an epistemologically sound research study using one or more methodologies, and appropriate quantitative and/or qualitative analytic procedures to develop findings or theory at a level commensurate with a doctoral dissertation. Demonstrates communication and use of research outcomes and skills in the capacity as a leader to academic, professional, and lay audiences in an understandable and persuasive manner. Has a clear understanding of developing a measureable research question to serve as the foundation of a research project, and of the role and application of APA guidelines in documenting research.
- Exemplary - Demonstrates exceptional skills in independently designing and conducting an epistemologically sound research study using one or more methodologies, and appropriate quantitative and/or qualitative analytic procedures to develop findings or theory at a level commensurate with publications in quality referred academic or professional journals or books. Communicates and uses research outcomes and skills in capacity as a leader to academic, professional, and lay audiences in an exceptionally clear and persuasive manner. Has a very clear understanding of developing a measureable research question to serve as the foundation of a research project, and of the role and application of APA guidelines in documenting research.

- Needs improvement- Demonstrates a developing understanding of the ethical implications of research and academic engagement, as well as social perspective and policy. Has an unclear understanding of the role and importance of the IRB.
- Competent- Demonstrates a solid understanding of the ethical implications of research and academic engagement, as well as and social perspective and policy. Understands and follows the IRB submission process.
- Strong- Demonstrates exceptional skills in understanding and applying ethical perspective to research, and in professional practice. Demonstrates ethical leadership in professional communities. Demonstrates a clear understanding and use of the IRB process.
4. Competency: Leadership
Explanation: Demonstrating leadership through the development and communication of original research and innovative perspectives in the field of media psychology, as well as through social advocacy and activities in the area of social justice.
- Needs improvement- Shows some evidence of the importance of producing research that can provide leadership in the field of media psychology. Shows some evidence of assuming leadership perspectives and positions in the pursuit of social advocacy.
- Competent- Demonstrates participation in transformative efforts of social advocacy and social justice, through the development of original research and the generation of new ideas in media psychology.
- Strong- Demonstrates exceptional leadership of transformative change, creatively and strategically, through the development and communication of original research, leadership efforts in professional communities, and efforts in social advocacy.
